Day and multi-day trips

Want to get away from Amsterdam for a half-day, full day, or even longer? Want to dive deeper into the rich regional culture or nature? Then scroll down for some options to consider.

Don’t see yours on this list? No worries. Since we run many custom, private tours, chances are we’ve toured others to the city or village you would like to visit. We’re happy to think along, and discuss your tour wishes and options with you.

Depending on your preferences and the most sensible routes, we can also combine a couple of them into a private multi-day excursion (read more below). Question is: Where do you want to go?

Multi-day excursions

Perhaps you want to take your time exploring the lowlands, deep dive into the Dutch & Flemish Golden Age, spend time in the stunning Wadden Islands up north, trace the footsteps of your Dutch ancestors, or visit many of the WWII sites in the country and surroundings. Whatever the reason, we can help you design the multi-day tour of your dreams.

Some sample multi-day itineraries include:

1. Amsterdam – Giethoorn – Friesland – island of Schiermonnikoog – Hindeloopen – Afsluitdijk – Bergen – Amsterdam

2. Amsterdam – The Hague – Zeeland – Bruges – Ghent – Brussels – Rotterdam – Kinderdijk – Amsterdam

3. Amsterdam – Giethoorn – Arnhem or Nijmegen – Valkenburg or Maastricht – Antwerp – Gouda – Utrecht – Amsterdam

4. Cologne, Aachen and other parts of Germany

5. We custom create yours together!

If you haven’t already booked with Tom, do it now! Tom planned an extraordinary four days for our family during the peak tulip tourist season. We had an amazing private guide (Stan) in Amsterdam for both biking and a food tour. Tom personally took us to the tulip fields, biking in Holland, and to see the windmills, where my college-aged daughter loved his engineering expertise. We also thoroughly enjoyed day trips to Bruges and Delft/The Hague. Our great guide in The Hague (Renee) personalized the tour for lesser-known sites that interested our 20-year old daughter. Tom went above-and-beyond to get us to the F1 race track in Zandvoort. It couldn’t have worked out better as we were able to watch the end of an F1 race (in Italy) with the locals at the track as the Dutch driver, Max Verstappen, won the race! We unexpectedly ran into Tom at a restaurant in Amsterdam, where he sent our family a nice bottle of champagne. Way to go to Tom and his entire team for creating an amazing vacation experience for our family!

Giethoorn

Giethoorn private tour.jpg

Giethoorn private tour from Amsterdam

Giethoorn is a charming 800-year-old village in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from Amsterdam to Giethoorn, making it a perfect day excursion. Often called the ‘Venice of the North’, it’s filled with beautiful canals and fairytale-like wooden bridges.

It’s enjoyable to walk in this idyllic town. But it’s even more fun to relax on a private boat tour that cruises through the canals, so you can admire the pristine scenery with its picturesque thatched-roof cottages.

We combine a trip to Giethoorn with short visits to other quaint towns along the route, such as Urk, Blokzijl, or Kampen.

If you’re up for seeing more of the Dutch countryside, why not add on one of our other popular, private Dutch Countryside tours to your trip!

I can’t rave enough about Toms Travel Tours. I just returned from a 3-day pvt. guided tour with Tom. From my first correspondence via email I knew I had selected the BEST touring company to meet my specific needs. I wanted to visit the areas north of Amsterdam, specifically the picture postcard village of Giethoorn. He created a terrific and very FLEXIBLE itinerary based on my personal interests & activity preferences—-biking, boating, wildlife, & photography. I felt quite fortunate to have Tom as my guide for those 3 remarkable & memorable days. He spoke perfect English and knows his native country inside and out. I learned so much about the areas we visited in addition to enjoying all the sites/activities.

We spent two full days with Henk which was such a great learning experience. He was extremely knowledgable and made the tours so much fun and enjoyable. (...). We continued on to Delft and visited the factory which was definitely worth seeing then walked around the town before heading to The Hague which was very impressive. Tom was wonderful to deal with and always got back to us promptly. We highly recommend this tour company to anyone visiting the area. Thanks again Henk for such an enjoyable two days!

The Royal Tour

The Royal Tour

Dive into Dutch Royal history in Delft and the Hague

During this full-day exclusive tour, you will visit the royal cities and sights of Delft and the Hague and dive into royal history.

We begin in Delft at the Royal Delft Porcelain factory that began in the 17th century, then walk to the Nieuwe Kerk where many royals are entombed, including Willem van Oranje. After a cozy lunch at a canal-side lunchroom with Dutch classics like poffertjes, we will head to the Hague where the current monarchs reside. We will stroll through the city center along the King’s working palace, Paleis Noordeinde and royal gardens.

During our walk, we will sample treats of the royal suppliers, such as the Haagse Hopjes en freshly made stroopwafels.

Based on your wishes, we can either enjoy a tour of the Mauritshuis from 17th century Prins Maurits, or of the permanent Esscher exhibit in the Paleis Lange Voorhout, the former living and working palace of Queen Emma.

The tour ends with some elegant bubbles to cheer on our monarchs.

“We also took a tour with Jackie and went to Delft and the Hague which included a stop at Maurithuis in the Hague which we loved. Each of the tour guides really wanted to know what we wanted to see and tried to fit everything in. We would definitely recommend Toms Travel Tours and use them again while in Amsterdam.”

Rotterdam

Rotterdam

Rotterdam tour from Amsterdam

The second biggest city in the country has the biggest port in Europe and has quite the metropolitan vibe, in comparison to Amsterdam.

And because of its unusual architecture, Rotterdam is a Dutch gem that definitely deserves a visit. During our day tour, you will be surprised by the surreal bright yellow Cube Houses and De Rotterdam complex’s stacked glass towers. The architectural thrill extends to other projects such as the swan-shaped Erasmus Bridge and the red Willemsbrug bridge.

If you are into culture, the Museumpark is waiting for you with six different museums and galleries - there are plenty of things to see and do in Rotterdam! You can also see the country’s largest artwork in the Markthal while you enjoy a well-deserved drink.

Want to know more about what you can do in Rotterdam and the surrounding area, just get in touch.

Did you know? It is also very easy to head to one of the main Belgium cities like Antwerp and Brussels, where you can enjoy a great tour with a local there that we can organize for you too.

Haarlem

Haarlem

Day trip to Haarlem from Amsterdam

Often thought of as the little sister of Amsterdam, Haarlem has much to offer travelers who want to escape the ‘city’ for a smaller, quainter place with a rich history.

Haarlem dates back to pre-medieval times. With its ancient buildings, cobbled streets, and winding waterways, it’s one of the most photogenic places in the country. Our excellent guides will make sure that you enjoy that stroll back in time.

Top sights in Haarlem include the Grote Markt, the St. Bavo church, the Frans Hals museum and Teylers museum, old city gates, and much more!

This private tour is a 2-hour walking tour of the city and you can add an hour or more time to visit inside one or both of the museums if you wish.

A big thanks to Tom who gave us a wonderful day in the Netherland countryside, customized a 9-hour tour for two couples that included Haarlem, Zaanse Schans, Edam and Marken. Was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. Also, a shout out to Ron…

A big thanks to Tom who gave us a wonderful day in the Netherland countryside, customized a 9-hour tour for two couples that included Haarlem, Zaanse Schans, Edam and Marken. Was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and patient.
Also, a shout out to Ron, the guide Tom hired for our visit to Haarlem, who's knowledge of the city and the alms gave us a look of the city I don't believe all guides could offer. Also was helpful in finding us a canal ride that fit our expectations to finish a memorable day. Thank you Tom. Darrell - United States - Tripadvisor

Multi-day trips to Wadden Islands

On one side of the islands lies the North Sea, and on the other side the Wadden Sea. This very shallow sea consists of various sand- and mudflats crossed by channels. As a result of tidal movement, these sandflats are submerged at high tides. At low tide, however, it becomes exposed. It's such an extraordinary ecosystem and famous for its biological diversity that it's listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We can even go mudwalking to the island!

Private day tour to Texel

Texel is the closest Wadden Island to the Dutch mainland. This is an exceptional day tour to one of the most stunning locations in The Netherlands. This day trip will start with a pickup in Amsterdam and a ferry to Texel. It will combine sightseeing in mainland, boat rides, cycling or walking through picturesque towns, seal watching, beaches and more!

After this, you will head to De Haar Castle (Kasteel de Haar). This impressive Dutch castle is the largest, and as soon as you step in, you will dive into the opulence of its former residents, Baron Etienne van Zuylen and Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. When finished exploring the castle, we will set out to Naarden for a late lunch in a cozy restaurant surrounded by art & boutique shops. Naarden is a charming and important fortified city home to the UNESCO heritage site of the Dutch Water Defense Lines (De Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie). These water defenses form our largest national heritage site.

We will walk around the restored fortress walls, and get to know the ins and outs of the city and moat. In the summer, we can enjoy a canal cruise here.

*On request, we can visit Slot Zuylen or Kasteel Groeneveld instead of Muiderslot.
